raw oysters and goose liver…

so I didn’t make near as many entries about German food in 3 years as I have  in 1 year in Italia…

My friends seemed to be overly excited about oysters and foie gras…I don’t recall that I’ve ever had either. When they give me strange food and I don’t really like it, I usually just say “it’s allright”…which they’ve now learned means that I think the food is mediocre. This was the first time I actually got to say that I didn’t like something 😉
I’ll try most anything once, and I guess I’m a better person for having tried raw oysters and foie gras, but I will happily admit in the future that I don’t like either if I’m ever offered…

btw does anyone know if they still make deviled ham in the states? I used to love that as a kid…I wonder now if it was supposed to be imitation foie gras.

I cooked for x-giving…

a pan full of figs…

So it’s 4 dudes cooking part VI…cheers Daniele and Leo for cooking again. I’m being introduced to all kinds of new foods…or new tastes of old foods. It’s funny that the Italians have a reputation for cooking well…where did that come from…that’s kaka!!!
I may have had truffles last night (first time ever!). They were being cut, but I honestly don’t recall them going in, on or around the food…we must’ve ate them tho…Being as I didn’t taste them I can’t really comment on if they were good or not…were they in the Risotto??? I put a lot of cheese on mine 😉
Cheese is cool!!!

Apparently I was running my mouth off about Mexican food and I’m cooking again next week…
Did I mention I broke my approximately 18 month no-cooking streak by making hamburgers a couple weeks ago? i did…it was good!

real life lasagna…

Today I had Lasagna for the first time in Italy…It was homemade and it was in fact THE BEST LASAGNA I’VE EVER HAD. Thanks to Massimo and yer mum for making and sharing 🙂 mMMMM

Polenta, cuttlefish and poker.

So I talked some colleagues into a poker game. I didn’t even have to host (tho I guess in the last week I’ve had 2 dinner parties and hosted a movie night at mine – that’s too much activity).
Anyways Daniele cooked some polenta and cuttlefish. Those were both basically a first for me (I had tested cuttlefish once). The polenta reminded me of malt-o-meal. It was quite good. I guess you boil down some corn and add corn flour or something (yeah I’m realizing that I’m probably the worst cook in Italy). Cuttlefish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuttlefish) is some weird invertebrate fishy thing…

Chestnuts, chesnuts, or chessnuts roasting on an open fire?

I don’t think I’ve ever had chestnuts, but I did last night. I made the witty observation that in the States they would be covered in brown sugar, cream, ice cream, chocolate and pie…
It was a monumental moment and probably worth a picture…

Bella Ciao!

Somehow Bella Ciao is a communist anthem. I think it was something to do with opposition to the fascist govt in ww2, but I can’t recall all the details…anyways Happy Workers day to anyone that cares!

I bought 1kg of cheese from Sardegnia (1/4 of a round wheel). I am very fond of cheese, so this seemed like a good idea at the time…so now I conclude that I have to eat the cheese. There’s no other food in the house except for an unopened bag of cereal.
I still have yet to actually cook a meal in Italy. Cheese cubes for dinner me thinks….

Some Italian bird said she can actually understand my english cuz I speak clearly…ha…it’s not that often that I get accused of speaking clearly. Just a fluke I s’pose.

This week I had learned the Italian words for:
“large breasted old lady”
“lady with large ass”
“landing strip”

Fortunately for the Italians I have forgotten these words. Someone will have to remind me if you deem this truly necessary 😉

Weather today is lousy. I’ve not left my flat except to go kebap-hunting. I can’t really see me leaving since I have cheese to eat and wine to drink…

I’m also concluding that if I say something without acting excited and waving my hands around the Italians probably won’t take me seriously…If I speak slowly and calmly about anything important or life threatening they won’t really listen to me.

…and Bella Ciao sung by the bloody multi-lingual swissies…showing off one of the 29 languages they can sing in…

Ramblings…

Matteo asked me if anyone from the States had ever visited me. I said I think I’m the only ex-pat I know that’s never had a visit. Nice on me!

Next month it’s my ten year anniversary at the same company (sort of).

There is a tradition in Italy that on Easter you get a certain type of cake…It may or may not be called Columba…It wasn’t bad. It’s sort of a dry cake with some fruit inside. Easily edible 🙂
I asked PierPaolo to take a pic and he finally sent it to me:

Word of the day…

pollice verde=green thumb
I’m endeavouring to learn a new word every day. My plants are dying.

There’s a free kebap in the office, but I have a 1 kebap per day rule 😀

Sarzana

I went to a dinner with colleagues last night in Sarzana. It was a steak restaurant where they bring out a plate of raw meat (whatever you ordered – beef, chicken, rabbit, buffalo etc) and a hot stone to cook it on. It’s sort of like raclette, but man was it good!!!
Sarzana is a cute little medieval town. I hope to go back when it’s warmer.

It’s way cold of late. Not quite as cold as Frankfurt so I guess I can’t complain, but it sure feels cold.

My German boss told me an Italian phrase that goes something like “christmas is like fish. After a couple days it starts to stink”.
